This is a darkfield image (16x) of a mirror.

This mirror is called a ‘first surface’ mirror- there is no protective covering on the reflective surface. This one has been used to align and adjust the laser tweezer, and has been around for a couple of years. What happens over time is that cleaning the mirror degrades the aluminum: it wears off, small bits of dust make scratches on the surface, etc.

I like this image because it reminds me of how we portray spacetime in special and general relativity- lines represent objects, and intersections of lines occur when two objects interact. The hazy background reminds me of interstellar dust clouds, which fits in with the spacetime theme.
