The start of the semester finds us doing a lot of writing- experimental results, research proposals, etc. All that writing doesn’t leave a lot of energy to write a good commentary on the following images, taken of 2 MEMS devices from a (broken) laptop and (broken) Wii controller. They each cost less than $0.01 to manufacture and measure acceleration in all three directions (x, y, z).

So we won’t try to write something clever and let the images speak for themselves. These devices are an astonishing achievement of science and engineering- even more so, given that these devices are seamlessly and invisibly part of our daily lives.
